Ways to Cut Heating and Cooling Bills
Everyone knows that the price of energy has gone up drastically, especially in the past five years or so. Four or five dollar per gallon gasoline in the U.S. would have been unthinkable prior to that time. The price for a barrel of crude oil typically hovers around $100US these days, and many experts expect that price to move even higher in upcoming years. It is therefore not unusual for homeowners to be making extra efforts to figure out ways to cut heating and cooling bills which have also risen drastically with higher energy costs.
One easy way to make a small investment in technology to help lower home energy costs is to purchase a programmable thermostat. These units are easy to use and they can pay for themselves in less than a year giving you continuous savings from that time onward. There is absolutely no reason a house has to be the same temperature at night when everyone is asleep as during the day. And of course that is certainly true when no one is at home either.
Energy audits are anther good idea for those who want lower monthly cooling and heating payments. Experts will analyze how efficiently your home retains or loses hot and cold air and will find places where there are drafts and places air can enter from outside the house. They will usually offer solutions to the problems they find as well. Check with your utility company to see if they offer energy audits or if they can refer you to a company that does.
There are a couple of simple ways to save on home energy costs that many people surprisingly overlook. Changing air filters in your furnace or air conditioner is a simple task, and this only needs to be done once or twice a season. This will save money and will also allow you to have clean air in your home for family members to breathe. Another simple idea is to be sure and close the door and also close the vents in any room that is rarely used, like a guest room, for example. When guests do arrive, it is a simple matter to open the vents again for them during the visit.
